About Me

Hello!

Many of you may be here because you have been following me on Hungry Hungry Hippie.  And to the rest of you, welcome to my new site!

I decided to start a separate blog focusing on the intricacies of my FODMAPs journey.

I’m still learning as I go, but I’ve been having such success with eating a low FODMAPs diet as a way of maintaining my GI health, that I felt compelled to share.

How this site differs from Hungry Hungry Hippie is that these posts will feature recipes & reviews as they pertain to the various FODMAP groups (fructans, galactans, lactose, polyols, etc.) and how my gut reacts.

So whether you are in the elimination phase or a specific challenge phase, you will be able to browse this site for recipes and grocery ideas that I have tried and tested.

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor or registered dietician.  Everything I share will be based on my own experiences, so please consult a professional before you embark on any new food plans to alleviate GI discomfort.  Personally, I prefer to maintain my wellness through proper nutrition as opposed to prescriptions, but that’s my choice and you should seek medical help before making a decision for yourself.

  1. Elise I’m living your blog as I’ve previously stated. Im really interested in how the fodmap diet has worked for you, how long it took to improve, if you still have some symptoms etc? I have only just started the diet and for me it is fickle business, I learning the hard way that I have to strictly adhere to the guidelines, hard for a veggie lover such as myself, to much corn, to often and I, unfortunately react. Also, when I have a flare up of symptoms I not only feel unwell but I go on a wild eating frenzy, not fussy about what I have, a kilo of brown rice will surfice

I never have such episodes when I’m well. I have so many questions! I find it very helpful hearing about others experiences. Many thanks!

    • i improved almost immediately when i did the elimination phase. it was like magic.
i do still have symptoms when im not strict, which i can now predict and avoid when i definitely need to avoid (ie when im working or visiting somewhere or someone). im less strict when i know i have days off. i still follow a low fodmaps plan but i do tend to push it with veggies and galactans a bit. i have partially written a post about this which i will finish soon and post because im also curious about others’ patterns.
i tend to binge more when i slip up with lactose because thats the one i feel most immediately. so then i figure oh what the hell, im already a gassy mess, why not just enjoy it. bad idea. i do that less now, but it used to be a once a month (that time of the month if you catch my drift) thing for me.
the symptoms from most of the other fodmaps are delayed a few hours or more after ingesting and last a day or two (depending on when i have a BM), but fructose in the more processed forms (inulin) seems to be a pretty quick onset, much like lactose. it still isnt black and white though and im trying to detect patterns, but sometimes there arent any. the only thing that seems to be clear is that eliminating all fodmaps means i feel excellent. so ill continue to tweak the low fodmaps plan and share my experiences…

      • Hi Elise,
Thanks for sharing your experience. I am also super sensitive to fodmaps (painful bloating) and have found lactose is also the quickest to make a reaction for me. It’s good to read someone else has the same experience.
Also like B I never used to eat in a frenzy until the I started re-acting to fodmaps three months ago. I think it may have something to do with your body trying to combat the severe energy-zapping effect that a reaction has…. but that’s just my theory. I never used to get so tired after eating. To be honest I’m sick and tired of being sensitive to fodmaps but am dong my best to eat well and fodmap free. Like you I feel excellent if I can stay away from them… it’s not easy. K

  3. Hi Elise,
You have talked about having a fodmap free day when you are unwell, I’d be really interested to know what you eat when you want to get yourself back on track, I’m never sure what to have and would love to hear what works for others.
    Many thanks.

  4. Hi Elise – I too have been an IBS sufferer for what seems like forever (now in my 40′s) – but the past week or so has been horrible and did some online surfing to see what I could possibly find to help. First I found the FODMAPs and thru more surfing, found your site. Stress is a HUGE factor in my unhappy tummy – so with the past few weeks of craziness and eating what I now know from the FODMAP list as ‘bad foods’ – no wonder why I’m miserable!! I am now on day 2 of the elimination phase and feel so much better than I did 2 days ago. I was glad to read that you do eat ‘bad’ foods on occasion, I was concerned that I was going to have to lead a life of strict eating. I can’t wait to find out what my trigger foods really are since I don’t have a clue (my tummy issues tend to flair up during stressful times and I guess I’ve just accepted the other times as normal). Your blog is now one of my ‘favorites’ so I can’t wait to see what you post next :-)
